一、落实词汇量的扩大和写作能力的提高
词汇的积累是一个艰辛的过程，需要不断巩固强化和极大的耐心和不断的运用。问题是很多人忽略了运用这一环节，尽管花了大量的时间和精力，其语言表达没能得到明显的提高。
高级英语课文中有丰富的词汇和词组，学生应把课文中生词的注音、用法、例句等整理出来，灵活运用到写作训练中去。比如在学习完Blackmail之后，有学生运用课文中出现的大量词汇，编写了一个颇具讽刺意味的故事。
课文Blackmail讲述的是一探长欧吉维在得知某公爵及其夫人交通肇事逃逸后，跑到他们所住的旅馆来敲诈勒索的故事。文章对欧吉维和公爵夫人之间的心理斗争描述得非常精彩。他们两人都试图用自己的气势压倒对方，公爵夫人竭力想掩盖事实的真相，因为觉得自己的身份高人一等，处处表现得傲慢、强势、专横，目光总是犀利冷酷;而探长因为手里握有他们的把柄，想从他们那里敲诈一笔巨款，表现出来的是粗鲁、无礼、贪婪和没教养。文中运用了很多修辞和大量的肖像和表情描写、心理活动和动作描写，尤其是是心理活动描写，值得读者细细品味。
那位学生在学完课文后，深深被作者的文字魅力所吸引，非常兴奋，“忍不住要写一点东西”。她用文中所学的词汇和写作技巧，编写了一个“小三”与其情敌之间相互较量的故事，那“小三”强势傲慢的语言、表情被刻画得形象生动，让人读得很有触动。
该生通过巧妙的构思，不着痕迹的将所学的词语灵活地运用到了写作中，这比只是简单的用词造句有意义的多。该生牢实地巩固并掌握了所学的词汇，随之也扩大了词汇量。
二、落实修辞学习提高语言表达的艺术性
高级英语课文中有大量的修辞手法，如：明喻、暗喻、拟声、反讽、矛盾修辞、双关语等等，语句优美，语言表达具艺术性。教学中应让学生对修辞产生兴趣，并渴望使自己的英语语言表达具有艺术性。
例如：在学习“Dudley Field Melone called my conviction a victorious defeat” 这一句时，学生掌握了矛盾修辞。矛盾修饰是将两个互相矛盾、互不调和的词放在同一个短语中，产生特殊的深刻含义的一种修辞手段。有感于文字的魅力，课堂上他们发言非常积极。下面是他们头脑风暴矛盾修辞的结果：walking dead(行尸走肉);事故的年轻人(old young man);young old man(人老心不老);真实的.谎言(a true lie)等。
课文Mark Twain- Mirror of America 中有一句典型的头韵。“It was a splendid population—for all the slow， sleepy， sluggish-brained sloths stayed at home.” 头韵是指一组词、一句话或一行诗中重复出现开头音相同的单词，简明生动，起到突出重点、加深印象、平衡节奏、宣泄感情的作用。 学生在学到这一句时，均感叹马克吐温不亏为语言大师。有同学动手把所学的课文中出现的所有修辞手法总结罗列了出来，还有的同学直接去找有关修辞的书来读，并利用课前十分钟分享的时间比较系统地介绍给大家，同学们印象深刻受益匪浅。这种有意识的归类、总结学习，比只是被动地掌握课文中出现的某一单个修辞有效率的多。
课文中有很多移就。移就就是有意识地把描写甲事物的词语移用来描写乙事物。可分为移人于物、移物于人、移物于物三类。学生刚听到这个名词时感动很陌生，觉得好难学。当他们理解了定义之后，发现生活中他们已经是修辞“大家”了。他们能一口气说出很多的移就修辞来，a happy weekend， a sleepless night， merry Christmas， happy new year， a proud job， 等等。在学习这些优美的文句时，学生们产生了主动去使用相关修辞的冲动，并努力提高语言表达的艺术性。
三、落实翻译技能的训练
翻译技能是英语教学大纲要求培养的主要能力之一，高级英语课文中不乏长句子和难以理解的句子，都是训练学生翻译能力的良好素材，在训练过程中还应告诫他们要尽量忠实原文的文采。如课文中有一段话马克吐温对加利福利亚人的评价， “It was a splendid population—for all the slow， sleepy， sluggish-brained sloths stayed at home. It was that population that gave to California a name for getting up astounding enterprises and rushing them through with a magnificent dash and daring and a recklessness of cost or consequences.” 第一句话有参考书是这样翻译的：这是一群了不起的人—因为所有那些迟钝、懒散、思想僵化的懒汉们都待在了家里。这句翻译意思没有错，但没有把原文中头韵的修辞翻译出来，失去了原文中的美。还有一版本的翻译是：出来的人个个出类拔萃，因为凡是呆板、呆滞、呆头呆脑的懒汉都呆在了家里。应该说这一句翻译出了原文的修辞特色，但有一学生提出可否改为：出来的人个个出类拔萃，因为凡是呆板、呆滞、呆头呆脑的呆子都呆在了家里。因为原文的sloth 也属于头韵之列，笔者认为他改为“呆子”并不会造成误解，且更能体现马克吐温的语言表现了和幽默。 第二句有一参考书译为：正是那些人为加利福利亚赢得了这样的声誉：当他们开创一番事业的时候，他们会不计后果、代价以一种豪迈的气概和勇往直前的精神坚持到底。同学们讨论后，提出了以下译文：正是那些人为加利福利亚赢得了这样的声誉：当他们开创一番事业的时候，他们会以极大的锐气和勇气，不计代价、不计后果雷厉风行、贯彻执行。该译文较之前者运用了尾韵和重复修辞手法，且rush sth through含有快速贯彻之意。
学生在英语学习中像这样仔细推敲、字斟句酌，假以时日，相信提高的不仅是翻译能力，中、英文水平也会随之提高。
四、落实学生思辨能力的训练
一部有极高艺术价值的作品不会只因为其笔法而大放异彩，更重要的是里面蕴含的深刻思想。高级英语教材中所选文章都是由名作家撰写的，他们善于观察、思考，见解独到。品读他们的杰作能启迪读者的思维、提高其观察、分析和解决问题的能力。许多同学学习高级英语后变得“有思想”和“能说会道”了，而这正是高级英语教学的目的所在。
总之，高级英语教学一定要充分调动发挥学生的主动性、积极性，鼓励学生的独创性思维，让他们自觉自愿的去探讨、研究，这样才能大大提高其学习的兴趣和热情，真正把提高学生各方面的综合能力落到实处。
