屈原(约公元前340—前278年)，名平，字原。他出身楚国贵族，年轻时就表现出杰出的才能，做了楚怀王的左徒(官名)，协助怀王筹划国家大事，发布政令；对外接待各国使者，处理外交事务，很得怀王信任。这样就招来一些人的妒忌。他的政敌上官大夫在怀王面前造他的谣，说屈原居功自傲，连怀王也不放在眼里，怀王就怒而疏远了屈原。
当时在战国“七雄”中，最强大的是秦、齐、楚三国，“合纵”、“连横”的斗争非常激烈，最后谁能取胜，就由这三国的内政外交的得失来决定。屈原在楚国内政上主张选贤任能，励精图治，企图建立一个理想的如尧舜禹汤时代的社会；在外交上则主张联齐合纵，对抗强秦的连横。由于怀王疏远了他，屈原这些正确的`主张都未能实行。
怀王是个昏庸的君主，在秦惠王的离间和诱惑下，接连上当，断绝了和齐国的联盟关系，结果损兵折将，丢失土地，国势渐渐衰弱下来。秦昭王继位后，提出和楚通婚，约怀王相会，屈原极力劝阻怀王不要再上当。但怀王在其幼子子兰的怂恿下还是去了，结果遭到秦国的武力劫持，死在秦国。怀王的长子顷襄王继位，令尹子兰和上官大夫等人又在顷襄王面前构陷屈原，顷襄王一怒之下把屈原流放到江南。
屈原晚年在沅水、湘水流域长期过着流放生活，眼看祖国日益衰弱，即将被秦灭亡，自己报效君王的抱负不得施展，忧心如焚，无日可了，写了大量抒发忧愤的诗作，最后在绝望中投汨罗江自尽。
