ThisautobiographytellsthecourseofAmyChuahowsheraisedthetwodaughtersinChineseparentingway.Itisdividedintothreeparts.Atthefirstpart,itgivessomeintroductionsofthetwodaughters,thefamily.Andinthesecondandthirdparts,thewritertellsmoredetailsintheprocessofraisinghertwodifferentdaughtersandthedifficultiesshewasconfrontedintheprocess,andmostimportantlythesuccessthedaughtersachievedinmusicwhichbroughtAmyChuaprideaswellasthewholefamily.
Tosomeextent,Idon’tlikeAmy’sparentinginsomeaspects.Inmyopinion,shedeprivedthenatureofchildrenandpushedtoomuchpressureontheirchildren,especiallyonLuluwhowasundertheshadowofherexcellentelderdaughter—Sophia.WhileIwasreadingthethirdpartintherebellionpart,Icouldn’tcontrolmyownemotion,IfeltwhatLulufeltandevenhatedagainstherselfishandautocraticmother.Icouldn’tunderstandwhyAmydidn’tletLulugetupfromsit,forwater,noteventogotothebathroomwhenLulujustwantedarestduringthelonghours’practiceofviolin.ShemadeLulupracticeviolinalldayduringthefamily’svacationabroad.Shespoiledthevacationbylettingtheotherfamilymemberswaitingthepractice.Shewasunreasonable.
ButnextwhatIdoistoadmireher.
ThereisanoldChinesesaying“propertycanneverlastforthreegenerations”。ButAmyChuadidchangeit!HerparentscametoU.Sandsufferedatoughlifeattheverybeginning.TheytaughtAmymathandpianoinanextremestrictwaywhenshewasakid.Undertheinfluenceofherparents,nowAmyisfrugalandprettystrictwithherdaughtersandherself.Theyarethevaluablepointsofher.Althoughsheissoextremeonherparenting,shehastheadvisableideasthattheparentsandtheparentstobetolearn.
