Itmustbeheartbreakingtobeabletoappreciatetruegeniusandyetfalljustshortofityourself.Amancanspendhisentirelifestudyingtobeamathematician--andyetwatchhelplesslywhileahighschooldropout,ajanitor,scribblesdowntheanswerstoquestionstheprofessorisbaffledby.
It'salsoheartbreakingwhengeniuswon'trecognizeitself,andthat'sthemostbafflingproblemofallin``GoodWillHunting,''thesmart,involvingstoryofaworking-classkidfromBoston.
ThefilmstarsMattDamonasajanitoratMITwholikestopartyandhangaroundtheoldneighborhoodandwhosereadingconsistsofdownloadingthecontentsofwholelibrariesintohisphotographicmemory.StellanSkarsgard(thehusbandin``BreakingtheWaves'')playsLambeau,theprofessor,whooffersaprizetoanystudentwhocansolveadifficultproblem.Thenextmorning,theansweriswrittenonablackboardstandinginthehall.
Whoclaimscredit?Noneofthestudentsdoes.Afewdayslater,LambeaucatchesWillHunting(Damon)attheboardandrealizeshe'stheauthor--anaturalmathematicalgeniuswhocanintuitivelyseethroughthethorniestproblems.LambeauwantstohelpWill,togethimintoschool,maybe,orcollaboratewithhim.Butbeforethatcantakeplace,Willandsomebuddiesarecruisingtheoldneighborhoodandbeatupaguy.Willalsohammersonthecopsalittleandisjailed.
He'satoughnut.Heseesnothingwrongwithspendinghiswholelifehangingoutwithhisfriends,quaffingafewbeers,holdingdownablue-collarjob.Heseesromanceinbeinganhonestbricklayer,butnoneinbeingaprofessorofmathematics--maybebecausebricklayingiswork,and,forhim,mathisn't.
``GoodWillHunting''isthestoryofhowthiskid'slifeedgestowardself-destructionandhowfourpeopletrytohaulhimback.OneisLambeau,whogetsprobationforWillwithapromisethathe'llfindhimhelpandcounseling.

TheWillHuntingcharacterissomuchintheforegroundthatit'seasytomissaparallelrelationship:LambeauandMcGuirealsoareoldfriendswhohavefoughtbecauseofoldangersandinsecurities.Inasense,bybringingthetroubledcounselorandthetroublesomejanitortogether,theprofessorhelpstohealbothofthem.
Thefilmhasagoodearforthewaythesecharactersmightreallytalk.
ItwasdirectedbyGusVanSant(``DrugstoreCowboy,''``ToDieFor''),whosometimesseemstohaveperfectpitchwhenitcomestodialogue;lookatthescenewhereMattandSkylarbreakupandsayhurtfulthings,andseehowclearhemakesitthatMattispushingherawaybecausehedoesn'tthinkhedeservesher.
Theoutcomeofthemovieisfairlypredictable;soisthewholestory,really.It'stheindividualmoments,notthepayoff,thatmakeitsoeffective.
``GoodWillHunting''hasbeenratherinexplicablycomparedto``Rainman,''although``Rainman''wasaboutanautisticcharacterwhocannotanddoesnotchange,and``GoodWillHunting''isaboutageniuswhocanchange,andgrow,ifhechoosesto.
True,theycanbothdoquickmathintheirheads.ButWillHuntingisnotanidiotsavantorsomekindoflovablecuriosity;he'sasmartmanwhoknowshe'ssmartbutpullsbackfromchallengesbecausehewasbeatendownoncetoooftenasachild.
Hereisacharacterwhohasfourfriendswholoveandwanttohelphim,andhe'sthreatenedbytheirhelpbecauseitmeansabandoningallofhisold,sick,dysfunctionaldefensemechanisms.
