  差不多三个月前,在盐湖城召开的政党纲领听证会上,我向共和党提出了一个请求:打破长期以来对艾滋病病毒和艾滋病问题的沉默。今晚,我来到这儿,是要给这样的沉默作个了断。我带来的是挑战,不是自鸣得意;我需要的是大家的关注,不是掌声。

  IwouldneverhaveaskedtobeHIVpositive,butIbelievethatinallthingsthereisapurpose;andIstandbeforeyouandbeforethenationgladly.TherealityofAIDSisbrutallyclear.TwohundredthousandAmericansaredeadordying.Amillionmoreareinfected.Worldwide,fortymillion,sixtymillion,orahundredmillioninfectionswillbecountedinthecomingfewyears.Butdespitescienceandresearch,WhiteHousemeetings,andcongressionalhearings,despitegoodintentionsandboldinitiatives,campaignslogans,andhopefulpromises,itis--despiteitall--theepidemic,whichiswinningtonight.

  Thisisnotadistantthreat.Itisapresentdanger.Therateofinfectionisincreasingfastedamongwomenandchildren.Largelyunknownadecadeago,AIDSisthethirdleadingkillerofyoungadultAmericanstoday.Butitwon’tbethirdforlong.Becauseunlikeotherdiseases,thisonetravels.Adolescentsdon’tgiveeachothercancerorheartdiseasebecausetheybelievetheyareinlove,butHIVisdifferent;andwehavehelpeditalong.Wehavekilledeachotherwithourignorance,ourprejudice,andoursilence.
