【剧情简介】
卡通版变形金刚(the Transformers)是从1984年起至今美国孩之宝(Hasbro)公司与日本TAKARA(タカラ)公司合作开发的系列玩具和推出的系列动画片/影片的总称。但因为对动画片不甚了解的成年人的误解，在一定程度上广义地扩展到各种(能够变形的)机器人玩具和动画片。
美版《变形金刚G1》一共4季，前两季讲述的是擎天柱率领的汽车人和威震天(麦加登)所率领的霸天虎之间的战争故事。第3季则是接替擎天柱的补天士和惊破天(被宇宙大帝修复改造的威震天)分别率领各自武装为信仰而战的故事。美版《变形金刚》还有一个大电影，讲述的是补天士与擎天柱政权交接的过程，和全体变形金刚合力消灭宇宙大帝的事迹。
能变形的机器人，这个创意是由日本玩具公司TAKARA首先提出并使用在实际的玩具生产中的，他们在1983年推出了两种分别叫做DIACLONE和MICROMAN的可变形机器人，这两种玩具在美国市场获得了空前的好评，销量也十分惊人，这两个机器人就是变形金刚的前身，但他们与后来的变形金刚的本质区别是：虽然都是能够变形，但DIAKRON在设定上仍然是由人操纵的机甲，和高达以及超时空要塞系列中的战斗机甲设定类似，仍然还只是战斗工具而已，真正赋予他们灵魂和生命的是美国的玩具厂商孩之宝(Hasbro)，因此变形金刚真正的诞生要从1984年开始。
在1984年推出的《变形金刚》角色，大部分是利用TAKARA公司原积压的库存加以重新包装上市的。从1985年开始，孩之宝在玩具上加上了热感标志重新推出，而且在包装上有了些变化。比如1984年推出的迷你车人物都是以车形态放在包装中的，而1985年再发行版则是变成人形包装的。而且在几款“迷你车”中还加附赠了“迷你间谍”，是一种简单变形的回力车。
经过两年的市场培育，《变形金刚》已经成为当时家喻户晓的玩具品牌。孩之宝从1986年开始推出了许多原创人物，这些人物有部分的原型是在《戴亚克隆》后期所设计中。这一年中推出的新产品开始有了新的特点：合体机制。原本《戴亚克隆》中的合体基本都是六个或更多人组合，之后TAKARA设计师把合体部队规范为五人合体，体型较大的队长作为合体时的躯干，四名体型较小的队员作为四肢。超级战士与万能丧士、保卫者与布斯达等角色陆续配对登场。
